Lutheran Missionaries Safe Following Earthquake, Tsunami
LCMS missionaries and partner church staff were not harmed by the devastating natural disaster Friday.
Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) missionaries and partner church staff in Japan report they are safe following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the country Friday.
Additionally, contacts have yet to report any major property losses among Lutherans as a result of the earthquake and related tsunami, according to the organization, the International Center of which is housed in Kirkwood.
Rev. Mathew C. Harrison, president of the LCMS emailed pastors throughout the country seeking their prayers after news of the natural disaster, the organization said.
The LCMS will remain in contact with the Japan Lutheran Church and other partners as it assesses needs and responds appropriately, said Rev. Glenn F. Merrit, director of disaster response with LCMS.
