Star Trek: Into Darkness Patch Blogger Mark Glass: **** It’s time again to boldly go...where tons of TV and movie cameras have gone before. Space. The final frontier. For context, this is the second feature film showing the original crew of the Enterprise in the beginning of their careers, in an alternate time line, allowing both overlaps and variations from the stories and characters that started the whole franchise. The Great Gatsby Patch Blogger Mark Glass: **½ This latest screen version of the classic novel is a mixed bag of assets and flaws. Director and co-writer Baz Lurhrmann ambitiously tries for a 3-D spectacle with several lavish party scenes that Busby Berkeley would have envied. He inserts bits of anachronistically modern music into this 1922 setting. That worked beautifully in his Moulin Rouge, and hilariously in the opening joust of A Knight’s Tale, but feels overly…

Kirkwood native Nikki Glaser has come up through the comedy clubs, been a semifinalist on Comedy Central's "Last Comic Standing" and now has her own half-hour comedy special on the same network. The premiere of the special aired on Friday (yes! we missed it too!) but will be rebroadcast a number of times, so here's the schedule in case you want to set your DVR. Glaser's bio on the Comedy Central website notes that she's also had bits on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and has appeared in the film "Punching the Clown." If you haven’t seen the first two flicks, don’t start here. You’ll be missing too much backstory to get into the flow. After last year’s sleeper sensation, Beasts of the Southern Wild, we get another soggy setting for a lesser, but still worthy, coming-of-age drama that’s more about specific characters than a subculture.
