Last Saturday was a wonderful celebration of Kirkwood football and their great accomplishments of an undefeated season and its first Missouri state title in 114 football seasons. Because Kirkwood had to defeat Webster in the Class 5 Division 2 championship to reach this successful pinnacle, it comes to mind how many titles might have been determined by a Kirkwood and Webster contest in years past.
In 103 football contests, from 1898 to 2012, between Kirkwood and Webster, fourteen of their contests have determined championship titles – the November 5, 2012 game for the first time representing two. To date, the following contests have determined the following championships:
Date Winner Title
1908-11-12 Kirkwood County League Champion
1909-10-30 Webster County League Champion
1910-11-12 Webster County League Champion
1912-11-22 Webster County League Champion
1913-11-27 Kirkwood County League Champion
1915-11-19 Webster County League Champion
1916-11-04 Webster County League Champion
1917-11-24 Webster County League Champion
1922-11-30 Webster County League Champion
1923-12-01 Webster County League Champion
1966-11-24 Kirkwood Suburban South Conference Champion
1983-11-14 Kirkwood Show-Me Bowl Quarterfinal Champion
2010-11-19 Webster Show-Me Bowl Semifinal Champion
2012-11-05 Kirkwood Show-Me Bowl Class 5 Division 2 Champion
2012-11-05 Kirkwood Suburban South Conference Champion (de facto title)
Of particular note is that this list does not include all titles held by the schools but merely those in which they played each other and that contest determined the award. The 2012 Kirkwood Pioneers are the first team in the Adams Road Rivalry to win two titles from the same game, albeit the Suburban South Conference Championship title was a de facto award.
Congratulations to Kirkwood Team 114 for their spectacular season. Now comes the season of basketball and Santa Claus.
