Let us know what you think of Downtown Kirkwood's newest eatery.
Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe will open its doors Saturday at 10 a.m. in Downtown Kirkwood, just in time to meet the needs of hungry Mayfest patrons. Owner Nick Julian said he chose the location at Station Plaza (between Kaldi's and Pazzo's) because of the large amount of foot traffic it attracts. "The biggest selling point was the patio out front," he said, noting that the close proximity to the Kirkwood Farmers' Market was also a plus. Julian also said he liked Kirkwood for its hometown feel. Read our Q&A with Julian about the Kirkwood Pickleman's. The Plaza patio certainly will be packed Saturday for Downtown Kirkwood's MayFest. An art show and performances from the Maple Jam Band, Lucille Rapp Dancers Step 'N Out Band take place from 10:30 …

Young people are falsely posing as students of L’École Culinaire in an effort to get victims to buy phony magazine subscriptions, according to the Better Business Bureau.
The Better Business Bureau released the following alert Tuesday. St. Louis area residents should be alert for a new door-to-door magazine sales scam involving young people posing as students of L’École Culinaire, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns. A homeowner in the 5400 block of Pernod Avenue, in the city’s North Hampton neighborhood, said she was approached by a young man and a woman last week who asked her to buy magazine subscriptions to be sent to servicemen and women overseas. They told her that they were enrolled at the well-known culinary school in St. Louis County and were raising money to further their studies in Italy. The homeowner said she became suspicious when she asked the young woman for the name of the street where …
Local farmers’ market vendors say that the fruits and veggies they grow are superior to grocery store produce for many reasons.
Do you buy the freshest produce possible? According to many area farmers, the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store may not be as fresh as you think. With farmers' markets open now (or about to open) around the St. Louis area, including Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton, Ellisville, Wildwood, Arnold and elsewhere, we wanted to talk a little about what "fresh" means to you. Tim Hess, owner of Silent Oaks farm and a vendor at several area farmers’ markets, told Patch that most of the produce sold in local grocery stores comes from Calfornia or Florida, areas where many farms are staffed by migrant workers. “It’s a long trail and at the end of the trail you’ll find that migrant Mexican workers do …

Beer disributor Tom Stillman leads local ownership group.
When businessman Tom Stillman took to the microphone at the Scottrade Center Thursday, it marked the first time the St. Louis Blues have been in local hands since Kiel Center Partners (under the watchful eyes of Mark Sauer and Jerry Ritter) ran the show from 1991-1999. The St. Louis Blues have battled the tides of changing economies and different spots in the standings since the days when insurance magnate Sidney Salomon brought professional hockey to St. Louis for the 1966-67 season. An array of owners with varying personalities have run the franchise, first at the old Arena on Oakland Avenue (named changed to the Checker Dome in the Ralston-Purina Hal Dean era of 1977-83) and then onto the Savvis (now Scottrade Center) downtown. Don’t …
On Wednesday afternoon, the Kirkwood High School Track Field was renamed the Alvin Miller Track Field in front of hundreds of parents and students during a dedication ceremony for the alumnus’ long athletic career.
Alvin Miller’s list of awards and records is long. Kirkwood High School’s track records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 110 high and earning four varsity letters in basketball, three in football and two in track and field, are just some of them. But Miller, a 1983 KHS graduate, still has room for more. On Wednesday afternoon, the Kirkwood High School Track Field was renamed the Alvin Miller Track Field in front of hundreds of parents and students during a dedication ceremony for the alumnus’ long athletic career. The ceremony was hosted by the the Kirkwood School District Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money for educational programs and major projects schools can not afford. “It’s humbling to know the community has gone this far to …

Downtown Kirkwood's newest boutique serves up coastal inspired activewear.
Nancy Kaiser McGee had the idea of opening an activewear boutique when she retired in Florida. But then, she thought, why wait? Fun in the Sun Sports and Leisure opens in Downtown Kirkwood Friday. The activewear boutique at 121 N. Kirkwood Rd. brings coastal style and exercise fashion to a demographic of consumers that no one knows better than McGee. She is her customer, an area mom who not only lives an active lifestyle but supports her family’s activities. McGee, her husband and children live in Glendale and her kids attend Kirkwood schools. “The response has been overwhelming from everyone who has been in the store and gotten a preview,” McGee said. The entrepreneur, who led the St. Louis market for Banana Republic for 10 years, has …

The two greatest deterrents to lo locally grown produce and fruits are... 1. Convenience - everyone wants to have their needs met close to home, easily accessible and inexpensive 2. Instant Gratification - "I want it NOW, even though it is not in season I want it and should be able to have it!" Gone are the days of waiting for the peaches and tomatoes to ripen in the backyard! I personally would …   more ›
