A sign posted to Amici's Feb. 18 saying "Closed for Renovations" had residents scratching their heads as they wondered if the restaurant was closed for good. The answer is yes, Amici's is no longer.  Amici's closed its doors after six years of operating in the heart of Downtown Kirkwood. The owners cite parking woes and increased competition as reasons for shutting down. Construction is ongoing at a new restaurant in downtown Kirkwood: Sushi Bistro. The best estimate so far for an opening date is another month or two, according to city officials. Patch has not been able to reach the owners of the new restaurant yet, but we'll keep trying. Kirkwood zoning administrator Ryan Spencer said Sushi Bistro is replacing Blue Water Grill at 343 S. Kirkwood Road. Blue Water was a staple in the community, open for about 20 years, before it closed in late 2008. Habitat for Humanity plans to make a home in Des Peres after the organization received a variance from the city's board of adjustment Wednesday night, according to KMOX. KMOX reports that Habitat for Humanity St. Louis wants to open its second "ReStore" in the region. The store would be located behind the Des Peres Sam's Club and fill a vacancy that formerly housed a granite and marbel retailer. The re-store would sell new and used construction materials to the public with proceeds going toward the nonprofit. Learn more by visiting KMOX. 
BARx Crossfit, a fitness facility that focuses on high-intensity training, moved a step closer to opening in Kirkwood Wednesday night. The city's planning and zoning commission approved the development of the fitness facility that would fill a vacancy at 11216 Manchester Rd. At the meeting, commissioners recommended that BARx replace the property's aging lights on the rear and side of the building. Other conditions for the facility include adding an ADA accessible ramp and re-striping the parking lot, according to Kirkwood Zoning Administrator Ryan Spencer. BARx will need to submit a revised …
The Kirkwood Planning and Zoning Commission will vote Wednesday on whether to approve BARx Crossfit, a new fitness facility that focuses on high-intensity training. Petitioner Ed Lempitt is seeking a special use permit to open BARx Crossfit at 11216 Manchester Road in Kirkwood.  Lempitt said his goal is to have small classes of up to 10 members at the time. He said the gym would most likely open early in the morning, from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and also have classes in the evening, with classes typically lasting approximately one hour. The Daily Meal has named its top 50 cupcakes in the United States and Jilly's Cupcake Bar's French Silk cupcake made the cut. The site evaluated the must-have cupcake at the bakeries. The bakeries were judged on menu, cupcake design and frosting to cake ratio. Each category was scored on a 1-10 basis.  Jilly's received a 9 for both menu and design, but only a 5 rating in the frosting-to-cake category. Andy's Frozen Custard could take a step forward tonight as it looks to open its first St. Louis chain in Downtown Kirkwood. Members of the Kirkwood Planning and Zoning Commission will vote whether to approve the development of an Andy's store at 311 S. Tammy White, the owner of Sole and Blues in The Loop, has decided to start a new fashion endeavor in Kirkwood that will focus on comfort footwear. White hopes to open Sole, an extension of Sole and Blues, at 108 N. Kirkwood Rd. in Downtown Kirkwood by March.  "Sole is going to be more comfort driven with a fashion-forward type flare," White said, adding that shoes will feature high-fashion colors, for instance a suede wingtip shoe with a lime green sole. Patrons of Kirkwood's Local Harvest Grocery now have an easy and exciting way to try new fresh food every week.  The organic and local grocer has started a food subscription service called "Weekly Harvest." For $50 a week, subscribers receive a box that contains a week's worth of groceries, including fresh and local meat, produce, eggs, dairy and other locally grown or produced items. Paul Buzzetta, head chef and owner of Sapore Italian Cafe, couldn't be happier with his decision to move his restaurant to Kirkwood. The restaurant opened its doors the week before Thanksgiving in the space formerly occupied by Trattoria Branica in Kirkwood's Woodbine Center. "I fell in love with this location," Buzzetta said. West County Center will get a LEGO Store in May of 2013, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. The LEGO Group announced its plans to open the store Thursday in a press release. The St. Louis Business Journal reports: The 2,500-square-foot toy store will feature a “Living Room,” or interactive play area, as well as a “Pick-A-Brick Wall,” where customers can hand pick LEGO bricks and elements in bulk. A sign advertising a Dirt Cheap discount liquor store coming soon to 915 North Kirkwood Rd. has caused confusion in Kirkwood this week. Dirt Cheap filed for a commercial occupancy permit for 915 North Kirkwood Rd., but the City of Kirkwood revoked the permit because an appeal from U-Gas to develop the property is pending, according to Kirkwood Public Works Director Todd Rehg.
