Lunch with two centenarians
Two longtime Kirkwood residents, Peggy Sharp, 102, and Opal Otis, 100, will be interviewed at a luncheon starting at 12:15 pm, Sunday, November 11, at Fellowship Hall, First Presbyterian Church.Sharp, who taught in Kirkwood and Rockwood school districts for years, was one of the first two American college exchange students to Germany in 1929.
Otis and her late husband, Warren, ran dance and aerobics classes at the church and the Kirkwood Y for 40 years. In 1983, she started twice-weekly aerobics classes at the church for senior women in the community. The group called themselves "Opie's Army". Now disbanded, the remaining members meet monthly at a local restaurant to swap stories. Otis still teaches an occasional line dancing class at Bethesda Gardens, where she and Sharp reside.
