The Foreigner by Larry Shue
The Foreigner by Larry Shue is set in a resort-style fishing lodge in rural Georgia in the early 1980s. The uproarious comedy revolves around pathologically shy Charlie Baker, an English proofreader who has been cheated on by his supposedly dying wife. Unable to socialize, he is introduced to the lodge residents by his sanguine British army friend, Froggy, as one who doesn’t understand a word of English. Before long, Charlie finds himself privy to assorted secrets and scandals freely discussed in front of him. Some of these secrets involve a pregnancy, an inheritance scheme, and a racist county property inspector’s plan to oust lodge owner Betty Meeks and convert the lodge into a meeting place for the Klan. Charlie, of course, saves the day.
