By the Numbers: Student Transfers and the Kirkwood School District

The district held an informational meeting Tuesday to answer questions about student transfers from Riverview Gardens and Normandy schools.

The Kirkwood School District hosted an informational meeting for parents Tuesday night to answer questions about the student transfer process from unaccredited districts.

As Patch previously reported, Kirkwood had been selected by Riverview Gardens last week as a second busing option for students wishing to transfer from Riverview, a poor performing district, to Kirkwood.

View a video report from Patch partners, FOX2.

Here are some key numbers going into the decision and how it will play out for Kirkwood:

  • 152: The number of students Kirkwood School District will be accepting from Riverview Gardens and Normandy schools, according to a FOX2 report.
  • 12,000: Dollars per student transfer KSD is receiving from unaccredited districts. FOX2 reported speculation that covering the cost for transferred students could push Riverview or Normandy into bankruptcy.
  • Class guidelines for the 2013-2014 school year: KSD shared the following class size guidelines for the school year on their website: Kindergarten, 18-20 students; elementary, grades 1-2, 20-22 students; elementary, grades 3-5, 23-25 students; middle schools, 25 students; high school, 25 students.
  • 300: Students who applied for a transfer still waiting to see which school they will be attending. An email update from Cooperating School Districts (CSD) Tuesday evening said these applicants are in the middle of a second lottery process after their first, second and third choice schools were already filled.
  • 8: Elementary, middle and high schools in the Kirkwood School District.
  • 3: Families who have threatened to file a lawsuit against Mehlville School District—Riverview Gardens' first transportation choice for transfers—if more space is not found by Thursday this week to accommodate more students, according to a CBS Local report. The report said the NAACP also has suggested lawsuits against Mehlville and Kirkwood school districts for turning away student transfers.
What do you think? Do you support the transfer program? How much is too much? Do you think the school districts should find ways to accommodate more students? Tell us in the comments.
