Mall Curfew Presents Job Hunt Obstacle

The curfew at St. Louis Galleria restricts teenagers from jobs.

Recently I visited the St. Louis Galleria Mall with my sister and mom. My sister was supposed to be finding some new bedding for her apartment at school, but of course we never found the bedding, and instead spent our money on new clothes.

The Galleria has a curfew for people who are 16 and younger stating they must be with an adult or someone who is 21 and older after 3 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Now, I understand this curfew is for the safety of the children and adults throughout the mall. I do not understand though why they did not take into consideration the workers who are 16 or younger and how this might affect them. Today I was shopping around in Lucky Brand.

I could not decide between a pair of white jeans and some capris so me and my mom started debating if white should not be worn after summer or not, I said it should and she said it should not. We asked a sales clerk to help us. He was patient with our bickering and bantering, and brought me several pairs of jeans without a fake smile and an unenthusiastic, "sure".

After I decided on the capris, I asked the cashier for an application. She asked me how old I was, with me replying in a shy smile, "does it matter?" Apparently the store only accepts people who are 18 and older. She also decided to rub in my face how awesome their discounts were and how they were hiring.

Anyways, my point is, this curfew is rediculous and really hurting the teens who need a job. My suggestion is to add more mall cops and better security. Do not punish the kids who do not do anything. Now I might have to resort to working in a sandwich shop with horrible parking spots and long hours. Wish me luck!
