Adopt a Pet and the Internet

Patchers can support national and local adoption efforts through Petfinder's Adopt the Internet Day.

Petfinder is hosting Adopt the Internet Day today in celebration of the organization’s 15th birthday. Petfinder, which regularly features pets for adoption from Kirkwood and Webster Groves, is encouraging people to add a badge to their websites, take a pledge that they will tell one person about adoption and donate their Facebook status and photo to an adoptable pet featured on Petfinder.

The St. Louis Senior Dog Project holds adoption events every Saturday and Sunday from 11-3 p.m., at the Petco in Kirkwood. Adoptable pets are featured on the organization’s Petfinder page. The volunteer organization focuses on finding homes for dogs five years or older. The non-profit also has a variety of other animals who need homes and make appearances at the Kirkwood Petco each week. Many of the dogs come from former puppy mills or animal control, according to Elisa Leyva-Guerrero, foster parent and social media volunteer for St. Louis Senior Dog Project.

“Senior dogs who are picked up by animal control, generally don’t have a chance,” Leyva-Guerrero said. “We try to give these dogs a second chance."

“One of the advantages of adopting an older dog is that they are a little bit calmer than younger dogs,” Leyva-Guerrero said, adding that many are a perfect fit for older residents.

The Kirkwood Petco event is a great way to interact with the organization’s involved foster families, she said.
