Alice 'Sandsation' Hits Magic House Shore

The Alice in Wonderland sculpture on display in the backyard of the Magic House is no ordinary work of art.

Days of packing and carving 75-tons of sand resulted in awe and wonder for visitors last weekend as they beheld master artist Dan Belcher create the biggest sand sculpture to hit the "shore" of the museum.

Belcher, of SandScapes, produced a gigantic Alice in Wonderland themed castle that is on display until June 26 at the museum's Sandcastle Beach.

The world-champion sand sculptor has been constructing summertime masterpieces at since 2001 when the museum began its annual Sandcastle Creations exhibit. This year, the Alice sculpture compliments the museum's exhibit Alice's Wonderland on display until November.

"Normally, I'm asked to build castles, but this year, I was asked to build this to match the theme inside," said Belcher, who has been making sand creations for 20 years and has traveled the world constructing art out of sand.

His projects range from movie inspired sculptures, such as one based on The Incredibles, to sports, like the St. Louis Cardinals.

"When you find an interest in something, then you find a way to make your interest a part of your life," Belcher said.

His 75-ton Alice masterpiece leaves people amazed which makes Belcher enjoy his job even more. This encouragement gives him the excitement to continue coming back every year.
