Advent Banner Makes Impression in Glendale

A 45-foot-tall banner is sending a clear message of faith to the community this holiday season.

Members of in Glendale wanted to display their faith during the season of Advent in a new way this year.

"Last year we had been thinking about how we would project our witness of the good news of Christmas, and we wanted to do something as an alternative to a nativity scene," said Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore.

Graphic designer and church member Carolyn Dyess had an idea. She proposed creating a dramatic banner to be hung from the church's bell tower that would contain the prcolamation from Luke 2:11, "For there is born to you this day in the city of David, a savior who is Christ the Lord."

"Just as the banner is lighted in the eveining, we see Jesus as light for the world and love for the world, and (the banner) is just one way we can help proclaim that at this time of the year."

County Blue brought Dyess' design to life on outdoor vinyl, and Staat Tuck Pointing donated the installation. Memorial gifts left to the church over the years paid for the banner.

Dyess oversees the congregation’s art gallery with her husband, John, an illustrator.
