Amici's Closes Doors in Downtown Kirkwood

Owners cite parking woes and increased competition as reasons for shutting down.

A sign posted to Amici's Feb. 18 saying "Closed for Renovations" had residents scratching their heads as they wondered if the restaurant was closed for good. The answer is yes, Amici's is no longer.

Amici's closed its doors after six years of operating in the heart of Downtown Kirkwood. The owners cite parking woes and increased competition as reasons for shutting down.

"Parking was a killer for this restaurant as it is for others," Kelly Jackson who handled marketing for the restaurant since last August told Patch.

According to Jackson, owner Dave Pullam said the chief complaint from his customers was the parking. Pullam owned Amici's along with Jim McInroy.

"The other issue is that too many restaurants were allowed in to compete with Amici’s," Jackson said. "They felt there should have been more consideration to small business. The number of restaurants and the type of restaurants are considered their top reasons for closing."

Jackson said the owners never felt any support from the City of Kirkwood.

Business had been slow for Amici's for the past three years, according to Jackson who said the restaurant fought misconceptions about being expensive, older patronage and too quiet for young children.

GREAT food, wonderful staff. You should really consider finding another Kirkwood location with better parking! Love this place. Wherever you reopen, I'll come back!

Thanks for all the wonderful comments for Amici's. The owners do really appreciate the support and it was an extremely difficult decision for them. They will be missed immensely. Kelly Jackson, KRJ Marketing Communications

There's a lot of competition for restaurants in Kirkwood. There's plenty of parking Around there; Amici's even had valet and the city already knocked down 2 blgs nearby For additional parking. Sorry to see it go, but it's unfortunately sign of times in very competitive area.

I doubt parking and competition are the top reasons. Service had diminished and if lack of parking and competition are truely the reasons, then they should open somewhere else and honor the gift cards or refund the money now. The last few times I was there it was packed. The last time I was there in Feb. it was full and we left as no one even acknowledged our presence.
