Amigos Sister Restaurant Serves Up Tapas

Diners in Webster Groves now have another choice in Mexican restaurants. It's called .

The newest eatery is located in the former Cappone's Restaurant location at 35. N. Gore Ave. by the railroad tracks. It is a sister restaurant of in Kirkwood.

Roberto Trevino, co-owner and chef, told Patch that visitors to La Cantina can look forward to the same award-winning margaritas offered at Amigos Cantina. But he said the new restaurant offers a tapas-type menu rather than the traditional Mexican dinners found at Amigos. 

"In cantinas in rural Mexico, people go in to drink and socialize and order botanas, which consist of little bites or Mexican appetizers," Trevino said. "That's what you'll find here."

Trevino, his wife Barbara and co-owner Rich Daniels had originally planned to open the new restaurant in the Delmar Loop. However, Trevino told Sauce Magazine that they weren't able to come to a compromise on lease terms at that location.

Trevino told Patch they decided to open the restaurant in Webster Groves because the community is almost identical to Kirkwood.

"If they like what you do, they embrace it," he said. "Plus my wife and sister-in-law (Susan Kennedy, who is the general manager) grew up in Webster Groves, so for them, it's like coming home."

Barbara (Kennedy) Trevino said, "There's a lot of history in Webster."

While I was at the restaurant, I had the Poblano Shrimp, and it was absolutely heavenly! The homemade poblano sauce was to die for. Honestly, had I not been in a restaurant, I would have licked the plate — it was that good! And I'm looking forward to trying several other La Cantina's botanas! But be forewarned, I may not share!

The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information call, 314-968-3256.
