Fashion Friday: Fall Sweater Trends

From classic cardigans to trendy tunics, Clay and Cotton in Kirkwood and My Friend's Wardrobe in Webster Groves have a variety of sweater options.

These days, sweaters come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. You can go for a traditional, classic look with a cardigan or try something more fashion-forward with a crocheted sweater or a tunic.

Classic Cardigans

Cardigans are always in style, and they have evolved from the plain old black or white to incorporate brighter colors like magenta or orange and intricate patterns.

At in Kirkwood, you can pair an orange Sisters cardigan ($59) with an embroidered blouse, a pair of jeans, boots and a big bag for a perfect fall look.

At in Webster Groves, you can also go for that pop of color with a magenta White House Black Market cardigan with silver detailing ($24.50). Like most cardigans, this one can be worn in a variety of ways.

"In today's world you can wear it with jeans or dress it up with black slacks or a skirt," said My Friend's Wardrobe's Carolyn Dolenz.

My Friend's Wardrobe also has a paisley-printed Talbots cardigan ($27.99) that looks great with a pair of khakis.

Perfect Pullovers

Pullover sweaters are also fall and winter essentials. You can go for a traditional color like gray, black or red, or again find that burst of color with pink, blue or purple.

At Clay and Cotton, go for gray with a Pure round-neck sweater ($119), which goes well with a pair of light gray pants and a cross-body bag.

At My Friend's Wardrobe, try a pink DKNY split-neck sweater ($13.99) with jeans and a cross-body bag.

Casual Crochet

Crocheted sweaters have been a big trend this fall, and they really pop when worn over a solid-colored cami or tank.

At My Friend's Wardrobe, you can find a white Michael Kors one ($17.25) that looks great with a black tank, a turquoise necklace, jeans and boots.

Trendy Tunics

Tunic sweaters and sweater dresses are definitely must-haves for this fall and winter.

Clay and Cotton has a yellow Tyler Böe cowl-neck tunic sweater ($164), which is ready for cooler temperatures with a toggle coat, a pair of leggings and some riding boots.

"The tunic sweaters need narrow bottoms, so for people who love the legging look, they're perfect," Clay and Cotton manager Karen May said.

Ultimately, the sweaters you choose to incorporate into your fall and winter wardrobe show-off your own personal style.

"They can be so versatile," My Friend's Wardrobe owner Robin Meier said. "It all comes down to personal preference."

Of course, as My Friend's Wardrobe is a resale shop, there's no guarantee that the items mentioned will be in stock when you arrive, but they have plenty of alternative options for fall and winter.
