Fashion Friday: Sports, Fitness and Leisure

You will love the newest styles in clothing for getting fit and for relaxing afterward at this little gem in Kirkwood.

Whatever the sport, this season’s trends are bolder, brighter and more flattering than ever before. And coastal looks in leisurewear are perfect for wearing on that much deserved beach vacation or for just relaxing by the pool closer to home.

Fun in the Sun Sports and Leisure at 121 N. Kirkwood Rd. carries a wide range of women’s fitness fashions and coastal-inspired leisurewear for men and women. The store also sells a small selection for children.

You will find Loggerhead Apparel, Virginia Witbeck and Island Company brands, which are exclusive to Missouri. They offer a large selection of coastal brands including Southern Tide, Johnnie O, and Vineyard Vine. Other brands include Rese and Beyond Yoga. In addition to clothing, Fun in the Sun Sports and Leisure sells beach bags, mats and accessories.

Sports and Fitness

Nancy McGee, owner of Fun in the Sun Sports and Leisure shared her thoughts on the latest fashion trends for tennis, running, yoga and fitness.

“Brighter colors are really in this year. Tennis looks are more playful and courageous with more styles. There are racer back tops and tank tops. Tennis clubs are getting more lenient than ever before (with clothing styles),” McGee said.

The old days of throwing on a tee-shirt and sweats for yoga class are long gone. The fashion forward yoga practitioner knows how to look great while getting fit and healthy and designers are offering more options that fit every shape, body and size.

“Yoga wear is definitely more flattering now. It’s come a long way, offering leggings and tops for all sizes,” McGee said. This may explain the latest trend, wearing yoga gear long after class has ended.

“It is becoming more acceptable to wear yoga pants and tops after class or tennis outfits after playing a game. It is acceptable to meet friends for lunch or coffee,” McGee said. “It sends the message (to others) that you are into fitness.”

Sales associate Tacy Dossett agreed and added, “Everyone is so busy, and they don’t want to take the time to shower at the gym or go home. The clothes are more comfortable and flattering. And it’s a lifestyle.”

Leisurewear

Leisurewear is just what the name implies, relaxed, comfortable and great-looking. Styles for women are sophisticated without the fuss. Fabrics are lightweight and made for relaxing poolside or cabanaside. Bright, bold colors and patterns are a hip, trendy look, while cool, crisp, whites never go out of style.

Men will look polished, yet comfortable in linen shirts and cotton shorts made for the guy who likes to look put-together without having to go to any trouble to get there. Slip on some sandals and you are ready to go.

McGee explained how surprised she was by men’s fashion trends for young men, those who she categorized as college-aged.

“There is this peculiar swing back to the preppy look for college-aged kids,” McGee said. She expressed how refreshing it is that young men are giving the t-shirt and shorts look a much needed rest.

Ladies of all ages appreciate a well-dressed man.
