Panera Bread Honors Kirkwood With '87 Sourdough'

The newly released loaf is a tribute to the multibillion-dollar company's beginnings.

Panera Bread is advertising its new 87 Kirkwood Sourdough in area cafes.

The loaf pays tribute to the day before Thanksgiving in 1987 when Ken Rosenthal opened the first Saint Louis Bread Co. in Kirkwood.

His sourdough was made from a special starter that he’d carried by hand in a cooler from San Francisco. It was an instant hit, according Panera Bread.
