Summer Really Heats Up

Heat and flying bugs...yuck. I mean, "Wonderful Summer!"

Summer is really heating up.

Some say I can be obsessed with the weather.

I flip on the news first thing in the morning to check the forecast.  I have 2 different weather apps on my smart phone.  When traveling, I am constantly adding cities to check what the weather will be.

My kids, the pug and I hit Grant's Trail this morning at 9 am.  My car thermostat was already reading the outside temp at 85 degrees.  They walked, and I ran (some).   But despite the brief distance, we were all in a full-body sweat by the time we returned to the car.  My son marveled that the car was still cool.  I pointed out that despite our soaked faces and clothes, we hadn't been outside very long.

The cicadas ain't helping the outside conditions.   I could take the constant, almost comforting summer buzz, if I wasn't getting dive-bombed each and every time I left the house, even to get the mail.

Some areas are worse than others.  Ours is apparently worse.  A friend came by to power-wash our house and he couldn't believe how many cicadas tried to land on him.  On the other hand, a friend in Affton said he hasn't seen or heard any cicadas at his house.  Yes, I am jealous.

The best cicada story I have heard so far was a friend that was purchasing dog food, and as she paid the bill a cicada flew out of her purse.  As a non-bug-lover, this sounded absolutely horrifying to me.

I once heard it's a good idea not to allow one's self to be frustrated by the weather, as we have absolutely no control over it.

I have tried to take on this attitude, but this early full-on heat week plus the cicadas may just do me in.

We have a family trip planned to Six Flags this Wednesday, where the water park and breezes caused by speedy rides will hopefully keep us cool.  A trip to the new Tropical Moose location in Kirkwood Park will be in order, as well.

Stay cool, Kirkwood and Webster Groves.  And may cicadas not fly out of your purse.
