The Weekend Planner: Breathe in 'Art & Air,' Behold a 75-ton Sandcastle, Taste Everything Strawberry

Why Go: Check out the amazing works of art by juried artists plus there's plenty of food, musical entertainment and creative activities for the family.

Where/When:Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery, STLCC’s Meramec campus, 11333 Big Bend Rd.; 5:30-8 p.m. Friday
Why Go:  Explore the interpretations of six artists rethinking how we occupy everyday spaces. Featuring the work of Carlie Trosclair, John Early, Nick Hutchings, R.C. Sayler, Garbriela Salazar and Jonggeon Lee. Curated by Ken Wood.

Why Go: Check out world-champion sand sculptor Dan Belcher as he builds a 75-ton sandcastle outdoors on the shores of The Magic House. Participants will learn how to build their own sculptures using sand and water.

Why Go: Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack have been performing their 'American Roots/Celtic Soul' music for years. This concert should be a blast since they're perfoming highlights from their twelve albums: a combination of country, pop, blues, Cajun and Irish songs.
Pricing: $13 advance, $15 at the door

Why Go: You know how good you feel when your hair is happy! Learn how to use the appropriate products to create the hair you want without chemicals. Hair artist Debra Smalls teaches the class. Folks with all textures of hair are welcome. Preregistration required.

2011 KIMMSWICK STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
Where/When: Kimmswick, MO is about 20 miles south of St. Louis off of Highway 55; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
Why Go: John Lennon could have penned 'Strawberry Fields Forever' about Kimmswick! It's all about the strawberries: fresh or chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry cheesecake, strawberry shortcake, strawberry ice tea and more! Festivities include musical entertainment, a petting zoo and rides for the kids. Plan ahead and mark your calendar for the huge Kimmswick Apple Butter Festival in October.
