Editor's Pick: Top Stories of 2012 for Kirkwood Patch

A look at stories on Kirkwood Patch that captured the hearts of readers and a thank you to the people who made them possible.

It's been an exciting year in Kirkwood and its surrounding communities. It's also been a year marked by tragedy. But on this last day of 2012, I would prefer to reflect some stories that captured the hearts of readers.

Grace's Glendale Bus Stop Takes Off on Facebook

To me, this story is about more than the many accomplishments of Grace. It's about the ability of an individual, or small group of individuals, to change the way people look at life. Likes on Grace's Glendale Bus Stop Facebook skyrocketed after this story and the article was featured in the Huffington Post. Thank you Grace, Colleen and Tom.

Dog Changes Life for Kirkwood Boy With Autism

This story illustrated the progressiveness of the Kirkwood School District, but more importantly, it showed that readers can relate to a life challenge even if they have not been faced with a particular situation. I attribute this to Maura Schiller sharing an honest and detailed account of her son Tommy and his condition. Thank you, Maura.

Pioneers Capture First State Championship Football Title

This link directs readers to a topic page that includes all of our 2012 Pioneer football coverage, the majority of which was produced by blogger Michael Biedenstein who oversees Kirkwood Football Facebook. Michael delivered preview and game coverage of nearly every Kirkwood football victory as he provided fans with the most comprehensive and immediate coverage of Pioneer football. Thank you, Michael.

Media descended on Kirkwood following the death of Cameron Vennard, a graduate of North Kirkwood Middle School and rising freshman at Kirkwood High School, who was struck by an Amtrak passenger train. One of Cam's peers, Annabel Dolan, cut through the commentary and offered, in my opinion, the most poignant look at a community in mourning through this letter to the editor. Thank you, Annabel.
