The Woman in Black produced by Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble

Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble (SATE) is proud to present their next production in its Season of the Monster. An entire season dedicated to exploring what it means to be a monster. Are they forces outside of us or our own creations? It’s not always black or white.

For the second production of the Season of the Monster, SATE will produce The Woman in Black, adapted by Stephen Mallatrat, based on the book by Susan Hill. Performances are October 30-November 9, Wednesdays-Saturdays, at The Chapel, 6238 Alexander Drive.

Just in time for the Halloween season, The Woman in Black is a classic of the ghost story genre; a play within a play recreated on a dark and stormy night. A lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood.

Adapted by Stephen Mallatrat from the book of the same name written in 1983 by Susan Hill, the play was first performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scaraborough in 1987 as a “Christmas Ghost Story.” The production was then mounted in London and has since become the second longest-running non-musical in the history of the West End. Its popularity has been further boosted by a 2012 film adaptation, starring Daniel Radcliffe.

SATE's performing ensemble includes B. Weller, Jared Sanz-Agero and Shelby Partridge. Mollie Amburgey is the Stage Manager. The production is directed by Rachel Tibbetts with set & lighting design by Bess Moynihan and sound design by Ellie Schwetye.
