BBB Alert: Customers Say Window Pros USA Took Money, Did No Work

New windows can make a big difference in your energy bills, but several St. Louis area consumers say their wallets were emptied instead when Window Pros USA  took their money but failed to install their windows.

The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be careful when dealing with the Fenton company or its owner, James J. "Jay" Major. The firm has an "F" rating with the BBB. Mail sent to the address on file with the BBB has been returned as undeliverable, and a former business partner says he believes Major may be going out of business.

Homeowners in Chesterfield, Weldon Spring and Eureka said they lost thousands of dollars to the company after waiting months for new windows, doors or other remodeling projects. Details of the customers' losses are described in today's BBB press release.

The BBB reminds consumers to check contractors out thoroughly before signing contracts or paying any money on home improvement projects. BBB Business Reviews on many companies are available by going to the BBB website or calling 314-645-3300.

Other BBB tips on hiring a contractor include:

  • Research a company thoroughly. If at all possible, visit its business address. Ask for references and contact them. Ask your county or municipal building officials if they have experience with the company.
  • Get a signed contract that details the work to be done, materials to be used, work deadlines and payment due dates. If you have any concerns with the contract, make sure changes are made before you sign it.
  • Do not pay the full amount in advance of the work being completed. Withhold a portion of the payment until you are satisfied with the completed job.
  • Get more than one bid. If one of the bidders is significantly lower than the others, try to find out why before signing a contract.
  • Pay by credit card whenever possible in the event you decide to challenge any charges
  • Check a company’s BBB Business Review at www.bbb.org or by calling 314-645-3300.
