BBB Alert: Solar Firm's Customers Say A 1 Energy Abandoned Them

Homeowners who spent $11,000 to $35,000 for solar energy systems have told the Better Business Bureau that the contractor, A 1 Energy, has failed to do the work for months.

One homeowner in Cape Girardeau, Mo., said she paid $21,000 last October and still hasn't seen the panels that were to be installed on her home. Other homeowners have been waiting for their jobs to be completed since late last year. Details of the customers's complaints are in today's BBB press release.

The company's president, Jason Hark, told the BBB that he had problems with labor, and he told one homeowner that weather was an issue. Several customers said they have had difficulty communicating with Hark.

The BBB reminds consumers that they can check out a company's BBB Business Review by going to www.bbb.org or by calling 314-645-3300. The review will show whether anyone has complained to the BBB about the company and how those complaints were resolved. The review also includes information about how long a company has been in business and other helpful information, such as the owner's name and where the business is located.

Other tips on hiring contractors include:

  • Beware of possible scams. Watch out for contractors in unmarked trucks or for companies requiring advance payment.  Don’t succumb to high-pressure techniques, such as notices that the price is good for one day only.
  • Try to verify the business’ true identity.  Get a business card and a physical location of the company and visit the offices if you have doubts.  It is always better to deal with well-established businesses.
  • Ask for references.  Make sure the company that wants your business has satisfied other customers.
  • Do not pay the full amount in advance of the work being completed. The final payment should be withheld until all work is finished and you are satisfied with the job.
  • Read and understand the terms of the contract before signing. It is a good idea to make sure that the contract includes a timetable for start and completion of the work. Note whether it includes penalties for cancellation.
  • Check a company’s BBB Business Review at www.bbb.org or by calling 314-645-3300.
