BBB Reveals Top 10 Industries For BBB Business Reviews, Complaints

The BBB served the public 6.8 million times in 2012, resolving 85 percent of complaints and providing reviews of thousands of local companies.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) had another busy year in 2012, providing service to consumers and other community members a record 6.78 million times.

That includes 4.5 million visits to the local BBB’s website, 1.7 million requests for BBB Business Reviews, nearly 5,000 charity review requests and 21,826 complaints submitted, 85 percent of which were resolved. We also provided newsletters to Accredited Businesses as well as consumers. (You can sign up for our monthly e-newsletter by sending an email to bbb@stlouisbbb.org.)

The most popular categories for BBB Business Reviews or complaints vary little from year to year.

As in past years, BBB Business Reviews of home construction and remodeling lists led 10 most popular categories for inquiries. Reviews of roofing and guttering contractors came in second. With the major hailstorm in April and other storms, it’s easy to see why roofers would be a popular category.

Mortgage companies jumped in to fifth place, up from seventh, and collection agencies made the top 10 list this year but didn’t make it last year.

The television, telecommunications and Internet services industries retained their ranking as the top three industries for complaints, respectively. Home construction and remodeling moved into fourth place from fifth in 2011. New to the top 10 list were retailers and mail order and catalog sales.

Today’s BBB release has more details on BBB statistics for the last year, including the two top 10 lists.
