Library Links: Halloween Horrors Abound at Local Haunted Houses

Check out what is happening at your Kirkwood Public Library to celebrate Halloween!

In "Halloween Horrors Abound at Local Haunted Houses", Maggie Rotermund
reviews the three St. Louis biggies, The Darkness, Creepyworld, and Lemp
Brewery (my fav).  I have to admit I am a Halloween enthusiast and your Kirkwood Public Library has a lot of activities, books, and movies to keep that Halloween spirit undead throughout the month and even the year (the teens host our haunted library in June). To help celebrate the holiday with your library this year, here are a few things you should check out!

We have a lot of fun activities for the entire family! We are one of the stops for Downtown Kirkwood’s Halloween Walk on Thursday, October 25th from 5-7pm. Get your trick-or-treaters all costumed out then stop at local businesses and the library to pick up candy.

CHILDREN-At the Make and Take Craft on Wednesday Oct. 24 from 4-5pm make a scary spider. On Saturday, Oct. 27th at 2pm, the youth services department is hosting a craft where participant’s can create a spooky nightlight. There are also two Halloween themed story times for preschoolers/toddlers on Tuesday, October 30th at 10am, and again on Halloween, Wednesday Oct. 31st at 10am.

TEEN- At Arts and Crafts Night, on Wednesday Oct. 24th at 6pm teens will have the opportunity to decorate a mini pumpkin. Additionally, there is a Teen Halloween Party on Friday October 26th from 6pm-9pm. This event requires sign up online at http://goo.gl/klUxp. Teens can vote for what movie we show at the party by dropping by the teen room and choosing a film from our ballot of six. There is one more Teen Movie Night this month on Monday, Oct. 29 at 6:30pm in the meeting room. We will be showing Poltergeist that creepy film about a young girl who gets kidnapped by a poltergeist with the immortal line “They’re here”.

Our staff did some separate blogs for KPL Staff Reads about choice reading/watching material for Halloween. One is Staff Picks: Favorite Scary/Halloween Materials a collection of staff choices for this scary season. There are also two film blogs specific to Halloween. One is the 31 Movies of Halloween:Adult and Teen Part 1 and Part 2, as well as the 31 Movies of Halloween Kids and Teen Edition Part 1 and Part 2.

Horror Tales- Check out this subject link for your scary reading pleasure.

To complete our blog for the week I have two must read recommendations for the season:

First, check out Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. There are actually 3 books in this series of collected folklore. Any story is great to read and share although my personal favorite is the tale of a bride who plays hide and seek on her wedding day and ends up being a little too good.

My second reading suggestion is any of the many collections of Edgar Allan Poe tales or poems. I have chosen to link to Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe because this collection houses my two favorite stories by Poe, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado”.

Remember to have candy on hand for Halloween on Wednesday, October 31. Happy Haunting!!
