Come Celebrate Black History Month at Kirkwood Public Library!

To commemorate Black History month we are excited to welcome Master Storyteller, Loretta Washington, on February 8th at  10:30 am for her program Where Would We Be Without Thee. Loretta will present a living history portrayal of Phillis Wheatley, the first published African-American female poet, abolitionist, Sojourner Truth, and Underground Railroad trailblazer, Harriett Tubman. Our children’s book clubs are also featuring some great historically relevant titles. On February 3rd at 6:30 pm, Family Book Club Jr. will discuss Freedom’s Wings, about a young slave boy’s journey to freedom along the Underground Railroad. On February 10th at 7pm, Family Book Club will meet to discuss The Watsons go to Birmingham, the story of a family that visits Alabama in the summer of 63’ and is greatly affected by the upturn of events that take place. You can also check out KPL Children’s blog, Feed a Reader and our Staff Reads blog for our lists of great African-American fiction and picture books.

Chelsea Bedley is the Assistant Director of Programs and Youth Services, currently baking her way through the “Nun” Better Cookbook by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
