Local Voices: Take a Hike, Love

A little fitness fun can turn your Valentine's Day from bloat to bliss.

What’s a fit girl to do on Valentine’s Day rather than wolf down a 2 lb. heart shaped box of chocolates?  While some guys might be impressed by your consumption stamina (imagine family vacations tracking hot dog eating competitions), if you’re looking for a lifelong fitness partner, there’s a better way.

Say “I Love You”, or even “I wanna show you my idea of a good time”, by scheduling a Valentine’s Day hike. Winter hiking brings out the inner adventurer, so it’s a good way to get a feel for your partner’s stamina and spunk, while showing off your skill sets. Finish the evening with home massages and a heart-happy dinner, and you’re sure to set the bar for date night.

Keep it simple:

1. Schedule a 3 mile hike on an intermediate trail, long enough to get the blood pumping, brief enough to conserve energy for romantic activity later. Check your local parks for suitable options.

2. Schedule two home massages. Leave enough time for a light snack before hitting the table. Determine who goes first and what you’ll do while you’re waiting.

3. Have a heart healthy meal planned (catered or pre-prepped) that’s easy to finalize. And don’t forget to prep the light post-hike snack ahead of time.

4. The rest of the night is a secret.
