STLCC to Offer New Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program

St. Louis Community College will be offering a new pharmacy technician certificate program beginning in summer 2013.

St. Louis Community College will be offering a new pharmacy technician certificate program beginning in summer 2013. This short-term allied health care program will be offered in partnership with MK Education, an education consulting company that specializes in health career training and curriculum.

The pharmacy technician training program consists of 165 contact hours, during which students will be in the classroom for 105 hours learning the fundamentals of working as a pharmacy technician.  This class prepares graduates for the PTCB and ExCPT certification exams.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to complete a 60-hour externship in a retail or hospital pharmacy setting.

“It’s very important for health care professionals to get much needed hands-on training before entering the workforce,” said Bree Abbas, student relations advisor with MK Education. “Employers are looking for individuals to come in with basic knowledge of real-life activities that would happen in a pharmacy setting.  This program is developed with employer-requested qualifications in mind.

“As the advisor and pharmacy technician, I will offer students resume critiques and career planning tips to help them burst into the pharmacy field,” Abbas said.

The $2,100 in tuition includes books, materials, lab fees and externships. Registration for the summer 2013 semester begins May 6. The college will conduct an information session about this program at 6 p.m. Monday, May 13, in Room 276 at the STLCC Corporate College, 3221 McKelvey Road. To RSVP, call 314-984-7777.
