Three St. Louis Community College students were among the award winners in the League for Innovation in the Community College’s 2012-13 Student Literary Competition.
Meramec student Elizabeth Grant received the first-place award in fiction for her short story titled, “Leda and the Swan.” Forest Park student Jennifer DeRose earned the first-place award for her essay, “Coal Factory.” Meramec student Endya Goliday received third place for her one-act play, “Creepers.”
Grant and DeRose each will receive $500 while Goliday will receive $100. All three winning entries will be part of the league’s annual winners’ anthology.
“This unprecedented success is primarily a testament to the work of the winning writers, of course, but also to their fellow students and competitors, the instructors who nurtured them and encouraged them to enter, and the campus coordinators who oversaw the beginning stages of the competition,” said Tim Layton, assistant professor in English at Meramec who served as the district literary competition coordinator. “Their success is a reminder of the potential we all work with every day.”
This year’s literary competition was hosted Foothill-De Anza Community College District and included 63 literary works. The jurors were Stephen Kuusisto, Essay; Juan Felipe Herrera, Poetry; Lisa McKenzie, Short Story; and Josh Kornbluth, One-Act Play. Each of the judges has published works and won awards for their literary pieces.
The 2013-14 competition will be hosted by Johnson County Community College.
The League for Innovation in the Community College, founded in 1968, is a nonprofit educational group of more than 800 institutions from 11 different countries and is the only major international organization specifically committed to improving community colleges through innovation, experimentation and institutional transformation.
St. Louis Community College is a founding member of the league and is one of 19 institutions whose CEOs comprise the League Board of Directors. The annual competitions for literary works, art and technology innovation are open to students who attend league board colleges.
