Meramec Student Charged for Threatening Tweet

St. Louis Community College-Meramec increased security for a few hours last week after a potential threat was found on Twitter.

A student's tweet of frustration at financial aid led to boosted campus security at St. Louis Community-College Meramec last week.

After turning herself in, Kara N. Hohman, 20, of south St. Louis County, was charged with peace disturbance for the threat, according to an STL Today report.

The report said Hohman's status on Twitter said: "If this financial aid doesn't figure itself out soon I'm going to kill someone. Going to meramec for class is bad enough."

As Patch previously reported, the threat had been discovered Wednesday morning. Campus police increased patrol around the financial office for extra security.

DeLancey Smith, director of public information with STLCC, called it a "regrettable incident," and wanted to take precautionary security measures just in case.

"The student turned herself in to Kirkwood Police once she understood the situation and seemed very remorseful," Smith told Patch last week.

Smith said campus police sent out email updates to students and staff at Meramec to alert them to the situation, as well as when the financial aid office reopened and Hohman turned herself in.
