POLICE: 11 Year Old's Attempt at Explosive 'Crude'

Police provide more details about a Des Peres boy's attempt at making an explosive device from instructions on the Internet.

After Des Peres parents found a potentially flammable device made by their son, they brought the object to the Des Peres police Department Wednesday afternoon.

KSDK called the device a homemade bomb Wednesday afternoon, but when the object arrived at the Des Peres Police Department, it was apparent to officials that the object was crude and likely did not pose a threat.

"It was very crude," Des Peres Police Captain Charles Milano told Patch Thursday morning. "It really wasn't a functioning bomb. It looked like something an 11 year old put together."

The object was comprised of lighter fluid in a plastic bottle with batteries taped to it. The boy reportedly made the bomb from instructions on the Internet. The device was not fused to an ignition source, Milano said.

Even though the object did not appear threatening, police interviewed the boy about the chemicals he used before firefighters with training in dealing with hazardous materials helped safely dismantle the object and render it safe, according to Milano.

Over the years, the Des Peres police has dealt with pipe bombs, Milano said, adding some kids who have made explosive devices use corrosive material such as aluminum foil, which was not the case in the incident Wednesday.
