UPDATE: Witness Helps Police Find Suspect in School Bus Accident, Young Kids on Board

Witness information and coordination with St. Louis City police led to the arrest of a driver who allegedly fled after striking a school bus on Interstate 44 in Oakland.

Kirkwood police were able to locate a suspect in an accident involving a school bus carrying 12 children between the ages of 6 and 10 thanks to a witness and help from St. Louis City police.

A vehicle reportedly struck the school bus on westbound Interstate 44 near South Berry Road in Oakland at around 8:30 a.m. last Thursday and then left the scene.

A witness was able to provide the Kirkwood Police Department with the vehicle's license plate number, according to Det. Dave Smith.

Kirkwood officers asked St. Louis Metropolitan police to assist in visiting the home of the registered owner. The owner was contacted and later responded to the Kirkwood Police Department with her vehicle for further investigation.

The driver was arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident at around noon. No one in the accident was injured.

Kirkwood police do not have information about which school district the bus was leased to. The case will be submitted to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review.
