New I-270 Lane Opens Between I-44 and Manchester Road

The Missouri Department of Transportation opened the new northbound Interstate 270 lane between Manchester Road and Interstate 44.

As previously reported by Patch, it's part of the expansion project taking place in both directions of I-270 that began earlier this year.

MoDOT released the following information in a news release Wednesday.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has just opened the new lane on northbound Interstate 270 from I-44 to Manchester Road (Route 100) this afternoon. MoDOT expanded this 3½ mile section of interstate from four to five lanes as part of a major widening project to improve traffic congestion. With this new lane, it will allow for 20% more vehicles to travel through this section of I-270 during morning rush periods. This added lane will help increase motorists’ current average speed from 30 miles per hour (mph) to approximately 60 mph during morning rush-hour. 

MoDOT urges motorists merging onto I-270 from I-44 not to stop and merge. The lane is now open and motorists need to keep moving.

Construction for the added southbound lane from Dougherty Ferry to I-44 will begin in spring 2013.
