No Right on Red to Stay at Essex and Kirkwood

Citizen request prompts changes at heavily traveled intersection.

The voted to keep the No Right Turn on Red sign for motorists traveling southbound on North Kirkwood Road onto West Essex Avenue. The sign was added as a trial posting in April.

Changes to the heavily traveled Kirkwood intersection started from a citizen request a year ago, according to a City of Kirkwood's blog post.

Last August, the city received a request to add a left-turn lane from West Essex onto northbound Kirkwood Road, which the city did in March following sewer repairs, according to Captain Brian Murphy.

Just days later, the city started receiving complaints that motorists turning right onto West Essex from North Kirkwood Road were making wide turns into the oncoming traffic lane, hence the trial posting of the No Right Turn on Red sign.

The city encourages residents to contact Captain Murphy if they know of a traffic situation that could be improved. Captain Murphy can be reached at 314-822-5858.
