Stefanus was principal for 11 years at Hixson and a St. Louis area educator for 30. At Hixson, she became known as being instrumental in the school's success during her tenure. A 2008 article in the Webster-Kirkwood Times said Stefanus "engineered a turnaround." Under her leadership, the school won a “Missouri Gold Star” and saw test scores rise, Acting Chancellor of DC Public Schools Kaya Henderson noted in a letter to parents.
