Free Full-Day Kindergarten Focus of Kirkwood Forum

Kindergarten teachers and administrators will answer questions from the public Nov. 9.

The is encouraging all residents to attend a community forum regarding free-full day kindergarten Nov. 9.

A panel of kindergarten teachers and administrators will moderate the event and answer questions from the public, the Kirkwood School District says.

The forum follows a special work session Oct. 3 in which the Kirkwood School Board discussed the issue.

At the work session, multiple board members said providing free full-day Kindergarten starting next year was a top priority for the district.

The move would cost the District $850,000, according to Superintendent Tom Williams.

During the work session Williams presented the possibility of phasing in free full-day Kindergarten by which tuition would be reduced gradually over three years until, but board members favored implementing complete tuition-free full-day Kindergarten starting next school year.

"This is the kind of issue that's a number one priority, and our financial team is committed to making it work," Williams said after input from the Board.

The Nov. 9 community forum will take place at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.

The regular meeting of the Kirkwood School Board will be held Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the board room at the district's administrative services center.
