Kirkwood Chosen as Second Option For Riverview Gardens Transfer Students

The Kirkwood School District has become another option after Mehlville for Riverview Gardens students wanting to transfer.

The Kirkwood School District has been chosen by Riverview Gardens as a second busing option for students who wish to transfer, according to an STL Today report.

Mehlville was the first choice, but the school district said it could only accommodate 150 students from Riverview Gardens. A letter sent to Kirkwood parents after Tuesday's decision echoed that the district would only be able to accept 100 students from Riverview Gardens and Normandy, both unaccredited districts, before disproportioning class sizes. Normandy students must arrange for their own transportation.

The deadline for transfer applications is Aug. 1.

Kirkwood's Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation (VICC) has already been in place for more than 25 years, the letter said, with roughly 250 students enrolled this year.

The STL Today report said 1,085 Riverview Gardens students have requested to transfer, with 13 choosing Kirkwood as a first option. Seven of Normandy's 859 transfer requests chose Kirkwood.

An informational meeting is scheduled for Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Kirkwood High's Walker Commons, following a facility improvements tour at 6:30.
