Kirkwood Student Excels at National History Day

Kirkwood High School student Jimmy McHugh placed 10th in the nation at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day competition at the University of Maryland-College Park, June 12-16.

His Senior (9-12 grade) Individual Documentary was titled “The Internment of Liberty.”  His teacher sponsor was Stephen Platte. More than 2,800 students competed in the national contest, a record number for the program.

National History Day in Missouri (NHDMO), the state affiliate of National History Day (NHD), is an educational program of the State Historical Society of Missouri in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council.

Fifty-eight other Missouri students participated in the competition, in which they are judged on the quality of their research and presentation after months of intensive research and success at local and state competitions.

Projects were based on this year’s theme, Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History and were entered in five categories: museum style exhibit, interpretive Web site, multimedia documentary, dramatic performance, and research paper.  Students competed in the junior division, which comprises 6-8 grades, or the senior division, which comprises 9-12 grades.
