Kirkwood High Newspaper Staff Awarded by Scholastic Press

Kirkwood High School Journalism students earned 2012 Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Awards. Here's what grabbed the attention of judges.

Kirkwood High School Journalism students earned 2012 Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Awards. All work submitted was from the 2011-12 school year.

  • Caroline Bequette, KHS 2011 attending the University of Missouri, and Laura Berner, KHS 2011 attending the University of Missouri, earned second place in Advertising Layout: Advertising Page for “Baby ads.”
  • Emily Stobbe, KHS junior, earned second place in News Page Design: Tabloid Format for “AP testing for dummies.”
  • The Kirkwood Call staff earned first place in Photo Layout: Full Page for "Teach me how to Instagram."
  • The Kirkwood Call staff earned second place in Photo Layout: Two or More Pages for "Room raiders."

The 2012 Kirkwood Call staff of 50 students was led by editors in chief Emily Goyda, KHS 2012 graduate attending the University of Missouri and Joe Weber, KHS 2012 graduate attending the University of Indiana.

Kirkwood Call photography staff included: Dylan Brady, KHS 2011 attending Webster University, Carson Carter (junior who transferred to a high school in Georgia), Sarah Heet, KHS junior, Andrea Keltz, KHS senior, Kelsey Landrum, KHS senior, and Maggie McWay, KHS senior.

Since 1984, CSPA has recognized outstanding achievement in both verbal and visual categories for newspapers, magazines and yearbooks. Digital media categories were added in 2009. This year, the Awards attracted 10,444 entries from newspapers and magazines produced by students at colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the United States.

Judges cited a total of 960 winners as either First, Second or Third Place or for Certificates of Merit for those deemed worthy of honorable mention in a category. Entries in its annual competition for individual achievement came from student writers, editors, designers and photographers.
