Vianney Out-Shoots Troy in Sectionals

Vianney had four in double figures as they downed Troy on Wednesday night.

There seemed to be agreement about how won the Class 5 sectional playoff game against Troy on Wednesday night.

“We made shots tonight,” Vianney coach Kevin Walsh said. “When you make shots, your defense picks up a little bit, your offense looks a little better. We made baskets tonight and that was a big key for us.”

Vianney’s game against Lindbergh, to win districts, was a little too close (48-40), and senior guard Tony Cochran said a goal tonight was, “no drama.”

There was little of that, as the Griffins outshot Troy 65-42 in a sectional playoff win over Troy, to move on to the regional game against McCluer North (24-1).

Another Griffin goal was to stop down Troy senior guard Derek Deters.

Vianney held Deters to 15 points, which included only three from the floor.

“I think we did one heck of a job doing that,” senior guard Richard Dorhauer said, “and we executed on offense.”

Oh yeah, back to the Vianney shooting.

Cochran was team- and game-high with 18. Seniors George Suggs and Richard Dorhauer followed with 13 each.

Vianney was up 16-12 after a quarter, 36-21 at the half and 47-30 after three quarters.

Their most damaging quarter was the second. The Griffins hit four treys on their way to a 20-point quarter.

“We weren’t able to get into our stuff, and of course they hit a bunch of shots,” Troy coach Ryan Meyers said. “We knew we were going to have to defend the 3-point line a little better than we did, but give them credit, they hit the shots.”

The majority of Vianney points in the fourth quarter came from the foul line, sinking 13 of 14.

“We knew they were a great team,” Meyers said. “I knew Coach Walsh would have them ready go play.”

Vianney’s game against McCluer North is at 2:45, Saturday afternoon at UMSL.
