VIDEO: Reading Gets Furry at Miriam School

The PAWS for Reading program came to the school for children with learning disabilities in Webster Groves on Thursday.

One wonders why exactly canines are referred to as man's best friend. Perhaps it is because they are the best listeners.

Students at Miriam School in Webster Groves certainly had a good listener in Olivia, the nine-year old Newfoundland who is a certified "Canine Good Citizen" from the TOUCH program and came with her owner "Mr. Rick" to listen to students read their own stories to her as part of the PAWS for Reading program.

The goal of PAWS, organized by national non-profit Support Dogs, Inc., is to provide an incentive for children to read more. With a non-threatening entity present while they share what they've written, kids can develop confidence in their work, and more interaction and social skills.
