Vianney Soccer Star Recognized for Respect Paid

The St. Louis Sports Commission's Young Professionals Group has awarded Jason Grant a sportsmanship scholarship.

During his time as a Golden Griffin, Jason Grant, of Kirkwood, demonstrated more than noteworthy athleticism; he demonstrated respect.

It's the latter that has garnered Grant, a first-team All-State selection and former captain of the varsity soccer team, a St. Louis Sports Commission Associates' 2011 Sportsmanship Scholarship for $1,250.

On multiple occasions, Grant's positive attitude on the field caught the eye of referees who would tell coaching staff how much they respected the midfielder, according to Grant's coaches, the St. Louis Sports Commission says in a statement released Tuesday.

According to the St. Louis Sports Commission statement, in his scholarship nomination essay, Grant wrote: “Although winning is very important, the way that you win is even more important. I was always taught by my parents and coaches to hold my head up after a loss, and to properly respect my opponent after a win."
