Locals Feed St. Louis; Grassroots Project Grows

Area residents turned out for a Des Peres fundraiser organized by Kirkwood resident Katherine Godar, with money going to the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

On Friday night, dozens of supporters of Feed St. Louis gathered at in Des Peres for a fundraiser for the organization, which was started by recent Villa Duchesne graduate and Kirkwood resident Katherine Godar.

"The Joplin and St. Louis tornados and the flooding throughout Missouri mean that more people than ever in our community are going without a necessity we take for granted: a meal," Godar said.

With the Feed St. Louis flier, 15 percent of each purchase went to the organization, which will go on as a donation to the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

Many of the patrons saw the fundraiser as a good reason to go out to eat.

"We are getting dinner and wanted to support Feed St. Louis," Brett Moorehouse said as his reasoning for coming by .

"I thought it would be a worthy cause to eat out," John Tsikalas said.
A few of Godar's family members came out to support the cause as well.

"I am immensely proud of having a daughter who cares so much about other people," said Gretchen Myers, Godar's mother. "She acts on her beliefs and does something about the injustice she sees in the world."

As previously reported in our , Godar has been collecting canned and nonperishable food items, as well as cash donations, for the St. Louis Area Foodbank since late 2010.

This January, she got in contact with LaCasey Milton, the food donations coordinator at the St. Louis Foodbank, who has become increasingly impressed with Godar's dedication to the cause.

"I don't meet very many young people who have the heart for getting involved with the fight against hunger and sticking with it," Milton said.

According to Godar, up next for Feed St. Louis is the creation of a website, along with a possible concert at Saint Louis University in August to raise funds for the organization.

On August 1, all patrons who present a McAlister's Deli flier from 4-9 p.m. will have 15 percent of their receipt donated to to benefit grieving families. Entertainment will include Clowns Mi Mi and Whisper & Pokey.
