Today eighth graders will tour KHS as part of a program to ease the adjustment to high school. What better time than to relive the defining teen moment?
Today Kirkwood School District eighth graders will get a sneak peek of what it's like to be a freshman at Kirkwood High School. At 12:30 p.m., North Kirkwood Middle School and Nipher Middle School eighth grade students will be transported via bus to Kirkwood High School where they will have an opportunity to tour the KHS campus and have lunch with administrators and staff they likely will have as incoming freshman. "The transition from middle school to high school is a big adjustment for many students," the district says in a statement. The Kirkwood School District Music Department collaborated with composer Clancy Weeks to create a piece of chamber music that captures the spirit of Kirkwood.
An original composition, "Kirkwood" tells the story of some of Kirkwood's oldest traditions and gives a musical nod to Scottish "founder," James P. Kirkwood. The Kirkwood School District Music Department collaborated with composer Clancy Weeks in writing the sheet music for a piece performed by the Kirkwood High School Woodwind Chamber Ensemble. The first movement, Battle for the Bell, is the annual “Turkey Day” football game between Kirkwood and Webster Groves; the second movement, Missouri River Runner, is an impression of the journey as the train passes by and over the Missouri River; and the third movement Greentree Parade represents the cherished local festival. Arts For Life nominated Kirkwood High School senior Max Kramer, juniors Carrie Antoine and Rachel Bisch and freshman Cole Whiting for the Thirteenth Annual Best Performance Awards for Community Musical Theatre. Kramer, Antoine, Bisch and Whiting were selected as nominees in the Best Actor or Actress category in a Youth Musical production for the musical Footloose by St. Louis Summer Players. Over 567 community theater artists, 31 shows produced by 25 community theater groups in the Metro-St. Louis area have been reviewed for consideration for Best Performance Awards this year. The teachers were suspended with pay and will return before the end of the school year, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday morning.
Updated: 9:27 a.m. Inappropriate behavior that violated the Kirkwood School District's drug-free workplace and staff conduct policies has landed six Kirkwood High School teachers on paid suspension following an incident last Friday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. News of the disciplinary action was revealed in a letter to parents, according to the Post. The incident did not involve illegal substances or students, district spokesperson Ginger Fletcher told the newspaper. On Wednesday afternoon, the Kirkwood High School Track Field was renamed the Alvin Miller Track Field in front of hundreds of parents and students during a dedication ceremony for the alumnus’ long athletic career.
Alvin Miller’s list of awards and records is long. Kirkwood High School’s track records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 110 high and earning four varsity letters in basketball, three in football and two in track and field, are just some of them. But Miller, a 1983 KHS graduate, still has room for more. Strong performance in AP exams and MAP tests earned KHS a Missouri top spot on the 2012 list of best public high schools.
The coveted U.S. News and World Report rankings of the best public high schools in America is out and Kirkwood High School has nabbed a top spot among those in Missouri. KHS is the sixth best high school in the state, according to the rankings released Tuesday that are based on college readiness, math and English proficiency, and student to teacher ratio. Here are the academic indicators for KHS, a U.S. News and World Report Silver Medal Winner: Algebra 1 and English 2 proficiency is determined based on student performance on Missouri Assesment Program (MAP) tests. Sixth graders will join 1.2 million people across North America in a demonstration against the form of harassment Friday.
More than 200 Nipher Middle School sixth grade students will participate in the “Stand 4 Change” anti-bullying initiative Friday. Students and staff will hold anti-bullying signs in front of the Nipher campus at 11 a.m., joining more than 1.2 million individuals across North America who have agreed to participate in the demonstration, the Kirkwood School District says in a statement. Under the direction of Nipher social studies teacher Florence Borman who has led the bullying awareness campaign at the school, students have watched video clips, participated in reflective exercises on self-awareness and had in depth discussions on bullying awareness and prevention, according to the district. St. Louis Community College police release the official offense report from the April 9 fight that broke out on the Meramec campus.
Campus police released the following offense report documenting the fight on the St. Louis Community College at Meramec campus April 9. The report reveals that police tried to alleviate tension between students less than an hour before the outbreak of violence. The attached report has been redacted by campus police, as well as Kirkwood Patch, to protect the privacy of students involved in the fight who were not arrested. Names of the three students arrested are not redacted from the report. They are charged with Common Assault through Kirkwood Municipal Court. Congratulations to Kirkwood teens Anna Hebrank and Lauren Geisz who competed in the finals at last weekend’s St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase Competition. Anna and Lauren, both Ursuline Academy students and talented singers, went up against more than 100 teens in the region to earn spots with the top 11 acts at Friday’s grand finale. As finalists, Anna and Lauren are invited to perform at several community events throughout the summer, including: They each are also eligible for $2,000 scholarships at Lindenwood and Webster universities for making it to the finale.
