Rick Stream Squeaks Out Victory Over Deb Lavender to Represent Kirkwood for Fourth Term

The battle for the newly drawn Missouri House of Representatives 90th District came down to 247 votes.

Voters re-elected incumbent Rick Stream (R-Kirkwood) to represent Kirkwood in the newly drawn Missouri House of Representatives 90th District Tuesday. Stream captured 11367 votes to Democratic challenger Deb Lavender's 11120 for a 247 vote (1.1 percent) difference. Candidates can ask for a recount if the difference between votes is 1 percent or less. The nail-biting results didn't surprise Stream's campaign manager Charles Hinderliter. "We were expecting it to be a close race," Hinderliter said. "We predicted a win going into tonight but an uncomfortably close win." This will be Stream's fourth term serving the Kirkwood area. "It's an honor to be re-elected again," said Stream, who on Tuesday night was suffering from laryngitis and had …

Stream and Akin: Any Difference?

A letter to the editor from a past member of the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees.

To the Editor: On October 25, police in Belleville arrested a student for bringing a gun on campus of Southwestern Illinois College. Rick Stream voted to allow concealed weapons to be brought on college campuses in the state of Missouri. At the time, I was chair of the board of trustees for St. Louis Community College. When I learned the Missouri House had passed that measure, I called every college president in our state. They collectively lobbied the state senate; the measure was stopped. Stream endorsed Todd Akin. He voted against women having health care choices. He voted against teachers’ tenure, as well as stripping teachers of their seniority. A St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial pointed out Steve Tilley former speaker of the house …

Deb Lavender seems like a sincere and kind woman, which makes her campaign’s disconnect with factual accuracy all the more disappointing. I have been dismayed by the negative tone of Deb Lavender’s campaign, and even more so by her playing fast and loose with the truth. Her campaign makes numerous claims about Rick Stream that are factually untrue, as well as bizarre assertions that make no sense…   more ›

Deb Lavender Will Be a Healthy Dose of Change in Government

Kirkwood resident endorses Deb Lavender, the Democratic candidate for the Missouri House of Representatives 90th District.

Patch: Several years ago I became active in local politics to help make Kirkwood indoor public places smoke-free. We sought support from “the powers that be,” but ONLY ONE elected official or candidate would help us: Deb Lavender. She knew that children’s health and saving lives was our priority. Deb walked Kirkwood streets with us, talked to voters, and helped assure business owners they would continue to thrive with a no-smoking law in place. Since that 2009 vote overwhelmingly in favor of a smoke-free Kirkwood, I've learned more about Deb and her sensible positions on state and local issues.  Deb also opened my eyes to the sad fact that our state legislators take thousands of dollars in personal gifts from lobbyists. I learned that our …

Letter to the Editor: Rep. Rick Stream, a Neighborly Politician

A college student recounts his years growing up next to Rep. Rick Stream (R-Kirkwood), the incumbent candidate running for the Missouri House of Representatives 90th District.

To the editor, It’s kind of strange for me to think of Rick Stream as a man running for State Representative for the 90th District this November. For the past 12 years, Rick has been my neighbor. He was “Mr. Stream” when I was younger and later was just “Rick.” Growing up, Rick was a tall, friendly man. Whenever he’d walk past my house, he’d always say hello to me if I was outside. Even though he probably had better things to do than talk to a 12 year old, he never showed it. Sometimes we’d have quite lengthy conversations ranging from the Cardinals to the biases in history textbooks. His house was a convenient cut-through from Lockett Lane to my home on Lockett Road. As a kid, I’d frequently run through his backyard with my friends, …
