Open Enrollment Dominates Webster School Board Meeting

The Webster Groves Board of Education addressed concerns about possible changes to open enrollment at its meeting Monday.

Webster Groves School District Superintendent Sarah Riss presented to the Board of Education about the district's action regarding the controversial issue of open enrollment. Riss presented on behalf of the district Legislative Advocacy Committee (LAC), a group that formed this past fall and boasts 50 members from the district. The committee was initiated when the district recognized the need for an organized body to be actively involved in state-level education policy. The superintendent told board members Monday that the district needed to closely follow the open enrollment policy now before the Missouri State Board of Education. The issue appears to be twofold. On the one hand WG is suffering from a declining school base, rising educational costs, reduced state money and excessive pressure of continual real estate tax increases to meet the shortfall. If WG believes that adding St. Louis City residents is contrary to WG school quality principles, then fine, start lowering the budgets, reduce staff and reduce the costs. On…   more ›
