Longtime Kirkwood Resident and Decorated WWII Vet Dies at 88

Visitation and service for Gordon "Hartley" Carlson will be held Friday.

The following obituary was provided by Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood. Legacy Gordon “Hartley” Carlson Longtime Kirkwood resident, Hartley Carlson died Oct. 30, 2012 at St. John's Mercy Hospital. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, followed by a service at 11:30 a.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, 7700 Davis Dr., Clayton, MO. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Hartley was born April 15, 1924 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Lane Technical High School, Chicago, and the Illinois Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Business and Economics. He served in the Eighth Army Air Corps during World War II as a Flight Engineer on B-24 Bombers earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals among others…

Amos Joseph Almeida, WWII Paratrooper and War Hero, Dies at 90

One of the original 101st "Screaming Eagles," Almeida jumped in D-Day, Operation Market Garden and The Battle of the Bulge. He moved to Glendale in 2007.

The following obituary was provided by Bopp Chapel. Almeida, Amos Joseph, one of the original 101st Screaming Eagles, passed away at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in the Bellefontaine Neighbors on Friday, Aug. 31. He was 90 years old. Born in Somis, CA, a small farming town north of Los Angeles to Mexican immigrants Luis and Teresa Almeida on Dec. 28, 1921, he was the oldest of 12 children. He also had three older half-siblings. Amos quit school in the ninth grade to help support the family and joined the U.S. Army in 1942, volunteering to become a paratrooper for the extra $50 monthly “jump pay” to send home to his mother. Amos jumped into Normandy on D-Day and also jumped in Holland for Operation Market Garden then off to a brutal winter …

Ex-Marine Known for Loyalty Dies at 51

John Thomas Tucker, Jr., of Kirkwood, died suddenly of natural causes Monday.

The following obituary was provided by Bopp Chapel.  Tucker, John T., Jr. 51, of Kirkwood, died suddenly of natural causes on July 16, 2012. He was born in St. Louis on Sept. 26, 1960. He graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in 1979 and went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years, earning the rank of Lance Corporal. He was stationed in Twentynine Palms, CA, and then MCAS Kaneohe, HI, with the First Marine Brigade; he was deployed twice to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. John then attended Parks College, where he became a licensed A&P mechanic. He worked for various general aviation service firms in St. Louis until he formed his own business as a self-employed contractor. On April 29, 1988, he married his …

Robert W. Bosworth, Navy Sailor and Track Star, Dies at 89

Bosworth made Kirkwood his home for 40 years.

The following obituary was provided by Bopp Chapel.  Family Bosworth, Robert W., found the peace he longed for on June 9, 2012 after 89 years and his struggle with dementia. He now joins the loves of his life, Sally Bosworth (nee Lerew), his wife of 55 years, and Jeanne Bosworth (nee Leavens), his wife of seven years. Kirkwood Funeral Director Lends Hand to Joplin

Bopp Chapel's Chris Roth was part of a mortuary disaster response team that helped to identify tornado victims.

A Kirkwood funeral director is back home after spending  last week working in a temporary morgue set up after the deadly tornado that struck Joplin, MO. For Chris Roth, seeing firsthand the devastation in that southwest Missouri city was mind-boggling. “As far as the damage, there is no real way for me to put it into words,” Roth said. “The only thing I can say is the photos don't really do it justice, because they don't show the panorama of destruction.  And I only saw a fraction of the town. “ Roth, 38, is a funeral director at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood and a member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association’s Disaster Response Team.
