The Pioneer girls kept the sectional game close, but not enough to compensate for Zumwalt's near-perfect shooting from the foul stripe.
The Kirkwood girls kept it close, up to the last one and a half minutes, but then two Zumwalt West girls hit seven out of eight free throws to ice the Class 5 sectional game at the St. Louis Community College at Meramec. The Pioneers lost to the Zumwalt West Jaguars 40-48, finishing the season with a 24-5 record. Kirkwood senior Natalie Fryrear was team-high with 16, but coach Brad Sutterer was reluctant to pick out any of the five seniors as stand-outs. (For more photos, go to the Kirkwood Patch Facebook Page) “We had a great group of players, especially five seniors here, who did the great things as a team,” he said. “They weren’t selfish. They cared about one another. We were a true family. "You can talk about the stats," Sutterer said…

The Pioneers beat the Panthers at Fox High School 69-29. The team faces Cor Jesu for the district title.
The Kirkwood Pioneers girls basketball team defeated the Mehlville Panthers Tuesday night 69-29 to advance to the district finals. Senior Natalie Fryrear started Kirkwood’s run with two 3-pointers and ended the night with 15. Kacy Jacobs added 13 for the night. The Pioneers led by 24 at the half and outscored the Panthers 19-9 in the third quarter. Kirkwood coach Brad Sutterer said he wanted to stop Mehlville’s Emily Fox, Mandy Fox and Sierra Gray from scoring. Gray and Emily Fox combined for six and Mandy Fox had 14 for the night. “Those are three players we wanted to take some stuff away from them,” he said. “I think we did a pretty good job.” The Panthers were physically unmatched against Kirkwood, who had seven 3-pointers in the first …

Webster junior guard Jordan Thompson is the Suburban South Conference Player of the Year.
It took a 40-point performance from Chaminade’s Bradley Beal to stop the Webster Groves boys’ 13-game winning streak, and prevent the Statesmen from claiming a district championship. Still, Webster Groves finished 24-5, including a 7-0 mark to take first place this season in the Suburban South Conference. That has earned head coach Jay Blossom league Coach of the Year honors, and several Statesmen players have also received postseason recognition. Junior 6-foot-4 guard Rayshawn Simmons has been named to the all-conference first team. Simmons averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 assists per game this season. Simmons flashed some of what is to come next season when he poured in a career-high 33 points in the riveting 80-76 loss in the Class 5 …

The Pioneers lose to top-seeded Jefferson City 54-48 in the title game of the Queen of Hearts Tournament Saturday at Villa Duchesne.
The Kirkwood girls basketball team never trailed in the first half on Saturday against Jefferson City in the championship game of the Queen of Hearts Tournament. But the Pioneers led only once in the second half, falling to the top-seeded Jays, 54-48, at Villa Duchesne. "It has been hit-and-miss for us when it comes to quick starts," Kirkwood coach Brad Sutterer said. "Today we were getting some good looks, and also scoring in transition early in the game. I felt we were still getting the steals later on, but we were not converting. We only scored seven points in the second quarter and six in the third." Kirkwood, which was seeded third, scored the game's first eight points and had a 14-2 advantage at one point in the first quarter. …

The Pioneers have won three of their past four games after defeating Oakville, 53-44 at Kirkwood.
The Kirkwood Pioneers jumped out to a big 23-8 lead early, and held off the Oakville Tigers en route to a 53-44 victory. Kirkwood is now 9-6 on the season. “We were very consistent in the first half and had good shot selections. I did not like our pass and shot selection in the second half as much, but even though we did not perform great in the second half our bench helped us keep the lead and get the win,” said Kirkwood coach Brad Sutterer. Mired in a three-game losing streak, Oakville was hoping to catch the Pioneers at an opportune time as Kirkwood was coming off a loss to Rock Bridge the previous Friday night. Oakville (5-11) coach Aaron Bosch acknowledged the challenge of letting his opponent jump out to a big lead in a road game. “…

The Pioneers are now 8-5 after defeating Parkway Central, 59-25, on the road Friday night.
The Kirkwood girls basketball team entered Suburban South Conference play as the only team in the league with a winning non-conference mark. The Pioneers showed that they will be a team to watch within the league as they defeated Parkway Central, 59-25, in the Suburban South opener for both teams Friday night at Parkway Central. "We want to do well and would love to win the conference, and that is one of our goals," Kirkwood coach Brad Sutterer said. "But more than anything we want to prepare for districts." Kirkwood, now 8-5, did not score a point in the first four minutes of the game against an improved Parkway Central team, which entered the game with a three-game winning streak (the Colts won only two games all of last year). But the …

Marquette finally overcame Kirkwood, 61-57, in overtime after trailing for four quarters.
As the cold weather brought ice and difficult conditions on the roads for drivers on Wednesday night, the Marquette girls' basketball team finally made things difficult for the Kirkwood Pioneers in overtime after not leading at all through four quarters of regulation, manufacturing a 61-57 victory. Coming into Wednesday's game, both teams shared records of 5-1 and were coming off wins earlier in the week. The Pioneers (5-2) defeated Pattonville on the road Monday, 42-40, and had only lost to Lindbergh prior to playing Marquette. The Marquette Mustangs (6-1), on the other hand, earned a 20-point victory over Parkway West on Tuesday night, 56-36. Kirkwood took control from the jump, with a 13-2 run to start the game led by senior guard Kalah…

Kirkwood is 5-1 behind new varsity girls head coach Brad Sutterer, following the retirement of coach Ron Sanford.
Despite numerous changes from last season, the Kirkwood girls varsity basketball team is off to a 5-1 start behind new head coach Brad Sutterer, following the retirement of coach Ron Sanford. Sutterer returns three starters from a team that went 20-6 last season. His Pioneers won at Pattonville, 42-40, on Monday. "We bring back some solid experience in junior Lianna Doty, senior Natalie Fryear and junior Julia Mullendore," commented Sutterer. Doty is the team's point guard for the second consecutive season, and joins junior guard Kalah Martin to form a strong offensive backcourt. The two combined to score 39 points in the Pioneers' season-opening victory on Nov. 30 against DeSoto in the Northwest High School Tournament. They also racked …

Lindbergh improved to 3-1 by defeating Kirkwood, 59-46, on Tuesday night. It was the Flyers’ defense that was the key.
The Kirkwood Pioneers girls varsity basketball team brought a perfect early season record of 3-0 to Lindbergh High School Tuesday night, but suffered a 59-46 loss as team leaders Lianna Doty and Natalie Fryrear fouled out in the second half. The Flyers played a stifling defense throughout the game to frustrate Kirkwood. Leading the home side on defense was senior forward Andrea Klipsch, who had several key second-half defensive rebounds to prevent the Pioneers from mounting a comeback. Offensively, the Flyers came out prepared to stand up to a taller Kirkwood squad. "We knew they might be vulnerable to foul trouble and so we came out pretty aggressive and used a dribble-drive offense to take it to them," explained Lindbergh Head Coach Bill…
