Convicted Felon Responsible for Rash of Car Break-Ins in Kirkwood

Anthony M. Johnson, 18, previously pleaded guilty to a Webster Groves burglary and was charged in January with child endangerment.

A man faces eight stealing charges in Kirkwood a couple of months after pleading guilty to burglary and other theft charges. Anthony Michael Johnson, 18, of the 400 block of South Holmes in Kirkwood, was charged April 25 with three counts of felony stealing, four counts of stealing a credit card and one count of stealing a car. Kirkwood Police said Johnson and others broke into cars in Kirkwood between June 26 and July 6. A Kirkwood man caught two men stealing from his car and chased them on foot briefly before calling police. Officers arrested Johnson a few blocks away with the keys to a stolen 2003 Mercury Marquis. Tools, Machinery Targeted by Thieves in Kirkwood

April 25: At 12:14 p.m., police responded to a theft from a vehicle parked at a construction site at Big Bend and I-270. Blame the Victim? Do We Encourage Burglaries?

A couple of readers debate whether victims bear any responsibility for crime. What do you think?

In Des Peres last week, a handful of cars and homes were burglarized in a residential neighborhood—a serious enough "spree" that the city blasted an email and text alert to the neighborhoods. As it happens, the burglar got into some unlocked cars, used the garage door opener and walked into a pair of houses in which the inside door was not locked. The report brought on this comment from a reader: "A person would not lock their car outside overnight (or anytime) because? And with a home garage door opener and valuables inside? Is this laziness or stupidity?" Another reader who said she was was one of the victims took offense: "I hope you are never a victim. You are acting like it was our fault." What do you think? Do we bear any …

Agreed. Just because a thief or vandal else clearly does wrong, does not mean the victim is necessarily "right" or blameless. It also doesn't mean they have equal blame or most of it. Such black and white thinking on this board. Sometimes victims couldn't have done anything better. Sometimes we can all learn something from the situation...like locking things up and keeping valuables out of sight.   more ›

Man Sentenced in Burglary of Rams Coach's Kirkwood Home

James Bright has been sentenced to 10 years in prison as part of a plea deal, stltoday.com reports. Bright and another man broke into the coach's home Dec. 31.

A High Ridge man has been sentenced for his involvement in a burglary at the Kirkwood home of Rob Boras, the St. Louis Rams tight ends coach. James Bright, of the 6200 block of Sunshine Drive, was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison as part of a plea deal, according to an article on stltoday.com. The plea deal dismissed other cases pending against Bright. Bright, 25, and Jeffrey Medcalf, of the 1100 block of Briarhurst in West County, were charged in January with second-degree burglary and felony stealing in the Dec. 31 incident at the coach's Kirkwood home. $30K in Jewelry Reportedly Stolen From Kirkwood Home

Police are investigating a report of approximately $30,000 in stolen jewelry, plus electronics are stolen after a window is forced open on another home.

The resident said a bowl containing approximately $150 in change was stolen while he was out of town over the previous weekend. Glendale police were called for harassment between neighbors, plus another call came in when one neighbor noticed a man acting suspiciously in another neighbor's driveway.

Police Investigating Thefts From Vehicles, Stores

Kirkwood police arrested seven people for allegedly stealing from local businesses, plus are investigating thefts from the work trucks of another company.

An arrest does not indicate a conviction.  April 1: At 8:57 a.m., two thefts from vehicles in the 100 block of West Washington Avenue were reported to police. Tools were reportedly taken from two company trucks which were broken into over the weekend.  April 2: At 7:51 a.m., police were called about a thefts of a Tom-Tom brand GPS, smartphone chargers, and an Illinois Tollway I-Pass that were stolen from two cars. Teenager Charged With Burglarizing Kirkwood Home

Kirkwood Police said they found Ken B. Moore's fingerprints inside a home in which several computers, tablets, an e-reader and an iPod were stolen.

A 17-year-old man faces charges that he broke into a Kirkwood home and stole several electronic items. Ken B. Moore, 17, of the 1200 block of Rockridge Place in Kirkwood, was charged Wednesday with second-degree burglary and felony stealing. Kirkwood Police said Moore entered a home in the 100 block of Harrison Avenue Oct. 18 and stole several computers, computer tablets, an e-reader and an iPod. According to a court document, Moore’s fingerprints were found inside the home. Moore was being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center Thursday. Bail was set at $10,000. Traffic Stops Land Stolen Goods, Car in Hands of Police

Glendale police report finding stolen items shortly after the alleged crime and a stolen car, all as a result of recent traffic stops.

March 15: At 2:21 a.m., a stolen vehicle reported on Sunday, March 10 was recovered by East St. Louis police during a traffic stop.  Authorities said a 28-year-old Florissant man and a 25-year-old Maryland Heights man were taken into custody by police at the time of the traffic stop. Kirkwood police stated they are wanted for questioning in this matter, but did clarify whether charges were filed. March 14: At 11:35 p.m., officers made a traffic stop at N. Berry Road and W. Residents Watched as Man Tried to Pry Open, Break Into Their Home, Cops Say

Police caught the suspect a short distance away; one witness identified him.

A man faces criminal charges for prying open doors to a Kirkwood house while the owners were home. Mark McCabe, 51, was charged Wednesday with first-degree attempted burglary and possessing burglar tools. Kirkwood Police said the occupants watched as McCabe used a large screwdriver to pry open a side and a back door of a residence about 10:20 a.m. Aug. 7 in the 10900 block Big Bend Boulevard. Police caught McCabe a short distance away, and one of the witnesses identified him. McCabe is imprisoned in the Missouri Department of Corrections Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green.
