The grassroots effort aims to spotlight positive school happenings with a fun editorial voice.
The first issue of "Kirkwood Quarterly: Officially Unofficial" hit inboxes Tuesday. Kirkwood Patch blogger Carola Gloyd is the woman behind the email newsletter with the mission of delivering families fun and informative content about happenings in the Kirkwood School District and City of Kirkwood. In her widely read blog post, Good in the 'Wood: Blogger's Love Letter to Kirkwood, Gloyd explains how the idea for a newsletter that spotlights positive district news had been brewing in her mind for some time. After becoming more involved in Kirkwood schools as a parent, she quickly discovered that there is so much going on in the District that the community could benefit from a newsletter highlighting accomplishments and happenings in the …

Should you take the kids to see the film "Bully?"
Last year, for Mother's Day, this mom's choice was to take advantage of "MY DAY" and force my husband and children to sit through one of my favorite movies of all time: Gone With the Wind. It went over like a lead balloon. This weekend, I am hopeful to see a film we truly all enjoy. As a mom and movie buff, I recently felt it my social and cinematic responsibility to see the documentary movie "Bully," currently in theaters. My original plan was to definitely take my kids with me to see it. The controversy regarding the rating from the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), however, caused me to hesitate. The MPAA gave the movie a PG-13 rating, which many supporters of the film objected to. The filmmakers were hoping that parents…

A story of high heels and sisterhood from a Kirkwood mother of two.
I had a great visit with my one and only sister last week, who came down over her Spring Break vacation from teaching. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the usual sister silliness that is bound to occur. When she visits, we go on excursions. Sometimes we visit favorite places, sometimes we try something new. Last summer we went on the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour. This time we visited the City Museum. This visit, I had a small bone to pick with my sister. Last month, we went on a family vacation together. We met up in sunny Florida for a long weekend in the middle of February. At one point during our vacation, she told me something somewhat surprising but also complimentary and funny. She told me that should I die first; she wants my …

Coffee: Addiction or passion?
I grew up loving the smell of fresh-brewed coffee every morning. One parent was a coffee-lover, one parent wouldn't touch the stuff. My household now is the same way. I love it, my husband will proudly say he has never let it touch his lips. (I have no idea why he is proud of this, but he is.) Occasionally he will burst into a song from his childhood piano lessons, "C - O - F - F - E - E; Coffee is NOT for me..." I remember when I started drinking coffee somewhat regularly. I was in college. (No, not for late-night studying...those nights were why Mountain Dew was invented; the soda with one of the highest caffeine contents available.) The very brisk walk to the cafeteria for breakfast before 8 a.m. class in the extreme northern Iowa …

Mom and kids hope for, then lament the lack of, a snow day Tuesday.
Alas. We were hoping, (I was fairly certain), in vain, for a snow day. Snow days are the best. The holiday feeling we get, the rejoicing from the children. First, the forecast. Ears prick up: "SNOW?" Then, we wait. We're supposed to get snow. We wait all day. We stock up on necessities. For me, this snow "storm" sent me out for protein to cook for dinner and orange juice. We ask one another while we're out, seemingly, and probably mostly uninterested, "Ready for the snow?" "Yes! Of course," we chuckle. We watch the news updates with fascination. We check status updates and comment on Facebook. And we get...(holding our collective breaths)...not that much. Boo. My husband and I argued Tuesday morning over how much we actually got. He said …

Movie buff mom's Handy Dandy Awards Season Movie Recommendations.
Professional football championships are nearly over, basketball and hockey seasons are in full swing, baseball season is dormant (although I have already heard people making plans for visits to spring training sessions). My favorite season of all...Movie Awards season, is right now! Just thought I would give a synopsis and my lil' ol' humble opinion on some of my favorite films from 2011: Carola's MUST-SEEs: (Disclaimer: If the stories or themes are not of interest to you, it is no longer a "Must-See.") Hugo (PG): Received the most Oscar nominations than any other picture. A Martin Scorcese film for the whole family. Our family saw this over Thanksgiving. A wonderful story, and also a wonderful, whimsical book. You may know Marty for his …

New Year's reflections more optimistic than the news shows?
New Year…I welcome you. I keep seeing “New Year, New You” as a theme. From news shows, ads for gyms and weight loss programs, etc. But I’m not sure I really want a “New Me.” Yes, I want to improve in 2012, as I always hope to. But a “new me?” What would she be like? Will the new me like the furniture I picked out just last year for my family room? If she hates it, what happens then? Will she sell it all on Craigslist and then buy new furniture? If that happens, the “new me” would surely soon be “divorced me.” Will the “new me” have my same hairstyle? Or do something crazy like shave it off? Or get a tattoo? I admit the regular ol’ me has always kind of wanted a tattoo, but my tastes are way too fickle…I would certainly hate it within a …

If you stay home, you might just miss that person who teaches you how to live.
I thought about calling in sick to teach my classes at the gym last week. I don’t even get up very early. I just didn’t feel like it. The kids both had stuffy noses that started with a sore throat. No fevers this time, but wasn’t that a faint tickle I felt in the back of my throat? It’s so cold, I thought. I could easily call in and find a substitute for my two classes. But no, I knew that’s just a slippery slope. And, it's not like I felt terrible. Winter hadn't even officially started. Get up and go, I said, reminding myself that you shouldn't call in sick unless absolutely necessary. I am so glad I did. About five weeks ago, a new person came into my Yoga/Pilates class, Danielle. As instructors, we are trained to always ask if there is …

Final road trip of summer leads north to Iowa for a taste of sweet corn.
This week's article is a tribute to corn. Sweet Iowa Corn, to be specific. Corn is an extremely versatile vegetable. Or starch. Both, I think. We cook it to eat it fresh off the cob, and put it in stews and soups. We pop it and make popcorn. The list goes on and on and on. We even use it to make gasoline. Early last week I had the urge to get out of town with the kids for a road trip, a last hurrah before the impending close of summer. My urges were to head north, partly because of the ridiculous and relentless heat wave, but mostly because Iowa is one of my favorite states and places to visit. I had originally hoped to head to Iowa for the upcoming Adel Sweet Corn Festival this weekend. My girlfriend has urged me for a couple years to …
